Nerve pain or neuropathy is most common in people with diabetes and other conditions that affect nerve health and function. Diabetic neuropathy is one of the most common types of neuropathic pain, affecting millions of people with Type 2 diabetes. This is also referred to as a peripheral neuropathy. Symptoms of peripheral neuropathy include numbness, tingling, unusual sensations and weakness in the feet, legs, hands and upper extremities. Other causes of peripheral neuropathy include carpal tunnel syndrome, exposure to environmental toxins, nutrition deficiency, alcoholism, side effects of medications and complications from other chronic illnesses.

Nearly 1.5 million people are diagnosed with diabetes each year. According to the most recent statistics, nearly 30 million Americans have diabetes, up from 25.8 million in 2010. And a whopping 86 million have a condition known as pre-diabetes. An estimated 20 million Americans have peripheral neuropathy. Diabetic neuropathy is just one of over 100 types of peripheral neuropathy.
